Currently, Autism is believed to affect 1 in every 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls and a child is diagnosed worldwide every fifteen minutes, according to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2012). It affects boys four times more often than it affects girls. In the United States, more than 1,500,000 individuals live with Autism, making it more prevalent than Down’s Syndrome, childhood diabetes, and childhood cancer combined. Autism is considered a spectrum disorder because the number and intensity of the symptoms may vary widely. Those severely affected are often withdrawn, dependent on others, and suffer from cognitive impairments. Those with less severe cases are often of above-average intelligence and independent, yet lack in social-communication skills. This is where BAFOL wants to make a difference.
The BAFOL Special Performing Arts Center is a non-profit community arts collective that encourages self-expression through visual art, dance, music, and fitness. We believe that art is an essential part of any thriving community. We believe that art lifts the spirit and raises the collective consciousness of the citizens of Louisville, KY. Our goal is to collaborate with artists and artistic organizations around the world in an effort to facilitate mutual support, recognition, and the exchanging of ideas.
